Disney Cruise Line is offering 50% off deposits for new bookings made by March 11, 2022 for select sailings through May 31, 2023.
This offer is valid on any new reservation for select Disney cruises departing between June 18, 2022 and May 31, 2023 that does not require final payment at time of booking. Remaining balance will be due at time of final payment. This offer excludes Disney Wish sailings through September 30, 2022.
And of course, know the current policies and changes due to Covid on their Know Before You Go page.
We just did a 7 night Western Caribbean Christmas cruise on the Disney Fantasy and we had a great time! We supposedly sailed at about 50% capacity so it was great! No lines or crowds anywhere. They couldn’t do the big deck and atrium parties but there were still plenty of activities, the shows were Broadway quality still, the dining was always delicious, the ship was kept immaculately clean as usual, and the crew members were fantastic as usual. Everyone who was eligible had to be vaccinated and everyone was tested before boarding, masks had to be worn indoors, and many other changes to activities n dining were made for social distancing and reduced contact, but everything was fine. It was no big deal. We totally felt safer there than at the parks or anywhere else. We loved roaming the gorgeous ship with so few people around and always being able to sit and watch the waves go by. We’ve sailed DCL several times before and it was slightly different, but still magical and great! We would absolutely sail Disney cruises again, even during these times, and especially during these times. My trip reports are coming soon, but I’ve started to post pics on my Instagram, so follow me there.

On Jan 1, 2022, the free Disney Magical Express bus retired, so you will need to consider other modes of transportation to/from the Orlando International Airport and the Disney World resorts now.
The above picture was from our last ride on Dec 29th when we took it from Pop Century to the airport after our epic December park and cruise trip. Sad. Trip reports are coming soon. I just started the photo posts on my Instagram today so follow there first.
So what options do you have?
1. Rent a car from the airport and drive yourself. However, prices will vary based on the type of car you rent and what deals you get. Don’t forget that you will have to factor in tolls and parking fees at the resorts per night as well.
2. Hire a private car/limo type service. This will usually be the priciest option, though it depends on what deals you get on the other options and how big your group is.
3. Book an Uber/Lyft. I always check both apps but most times, Lyft is cheaper there. Just keep in mind that they’re not allowing people to sit in the front with the driver nowadays, so if you have more than 3 people in your group, you will need to book an XL or larger instead of a regular sized car so it’ll cost more. Note the little number next to the car type to see how many people it can fit. If you need a car seat, make sure to book one that says it has one. Price it out in the apps for the day/time you’d be needing them to get an idea of pricing before your trip. It fluctuates depending on time/day.
4. Mears bus. This is the bus company that ran the Disney Magical Express before, except you have to pay them directly now. In fact, it’s using the same area at the airport and some buses are still the same, and it pretty much works exactly the same. Go to the Mears website to read more specifics and make reservations. They charge per person so it will depend on the size of your group if this is more or less than the other options. They also have a private car/small shuttle service if you don’t want to take the shared large bus with others and deal with other resort stops, but of course, that will cost more.
5. Sunshine Flyer bus. This is an upcoming new bus service themed like an old fashioned rail train. It seems very similar to Mears but you get some cute theming. Go to the Sunshine Flyer website to read more specifics and make reservations. They charge per person also and are taking reservations now for trips beginning Feb 1, 2022.
Note: most of the options will take you to/from Universal and other locations in the area as well.
Safe travels and feel free to contact me if you need help planning your trip.
Update: On Jan 28, 2022, Disney announced a new private car service option. More details here.
If you can’t be at Disney World for New Year’s Eve, you can at least watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks via livestream. LIVE broadcast of the New Year’s Eve “Fantasy in the Sky” fireworks beginning Friday, Dec. 31 at 11:48 p.m., ET. Tune in on the Disney Parks Blog site.
Disney Cruise Line just extended their temporary 60 day final payment and cancellation policy through Sept 30, 2022. This means that you have until 60 days before the sail date to really decide if you can do the cruise and pay the balance. Previously, you had to decide 90+ days beforehand. Now, you don’t have to pay the balance until 60 days out. As long as you cancel before the 60 day mark, you will get your deposit refunded without penalty fees.
Note, if you are a Castaway Cay member, you can book cruise activities like specialty dining and port adventures sooner than 60 days, but you have to be paid in full before you can book them. So, if you are interested in some of the more popular activities that can fill up quick, you will want to pay your balance by your Castaway level’s booking date anyway. You can still cancel and get a full refund up until the 60 day mark.
As of now, everyone, regardless of Castaway level, will do their cruise checkin, where you enter your passport info and pick your port arrival time, etc, at 30 days beforehand, starting at midnight Eastern time zone. Then, at 15 days before sailing, you will do the SafePassage registration to upload your vaccine card for everyone old enough to be vaccinated or request a test for the younger ones.
If you have a cruise booked through Sept 30, 2022, you should’ve gotten an email with the extension information. Here’s what it said.
For sailings through September 30, 2022, we are temporarily extending final payment until 60 days prior to sailing for Guests booked in unrestricted stateroom categories. This means that those Guests who have not yet reached their final payment due date can wait until up to 60 days prior to sailing to pay for their cruise vacation. Onboard cruise activities can be scheduled within your Castaway Club booking window once final payment is received.
In addition, we are temporarily relaxing our cruise cancellation fee schedule for sailings through September 30, 2022, as described below.

Disney World just announced two big changes for the next few weeks.
Extra Park Time for Resort Guests: To celebrate the holiday season, from Dec. 19, 2021 – Jan. 3, 2022, the early theme park entry benefit for Disney Resort hotel Guests and Guests of other select hotels will be extended from 30 minutes to 60 minutes.
More Disney Genie+ Attractions: From Dec. 19, 2021 – Jan. 3, 2022, the following attractions will be included in Disney Genie+ service* and will not be included as an individual Lightning Lane entrance purchase option:
Magic Kingdom Park: Space Mountain
EPCOT: Frozen Ever After
Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park: Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain
Note: Park reservations are already all taken for the days surrounding Christmas and New Years. Always check for park reservation availability before buying your park tickets. They’re two different things and both are required to get into a parks nowadays. Most resorts and dining are full too. That means it’s going to be super crowded. If you don’t already have everything booked, I don’t suggest going now.
(Nov 17, 2021) Today, Disney Cruise Lines updated their requirements for sailing. Now, to match the new CDC vaccine eligibility, everyone (U.S. and International guests) 5 years old and older have to be fully vaccinated before they are able to sail, no exemptions, for any sailings on January 13, 2022 or after. All of the other requirements for testing and such remain the same.
There are plenty of other requirements, so make sure to read their information page carefully before you even book and several times along the way as it gets closer to your cruise since things can change anytime. I won’t even repeat them here since they can change by the time you read this. Always make sure to read from the source, Disney’s official website below.
UPDATE 07/24/2024: The Genie+ service has now been retired at Disney World in Orlando. View my Lightning Lane page to learn all about the new service. The Genie+ functionality at Disneyland California remains the same, just renamed to Lightning Lane.
The Genie/Lightning Lane services have gone live at Disney World. I’ve been hearing alot of questions and confusion, so I’ll attempt to clear things up. Things are always changing at Disney though, so I’ll update these as much as possible.
Here are some quick bullet points if you want the short version.
This works very similarly to the old FastPass/MaxPass system, just paid for and with different names for things. Employ some of the same strategies.
The free standby lines or boarding groups are still available for most rides if you don’t want to buy any of this.
The Genie+ includes all the “regular” rides at each park, whereas the individual a la carte/individual lightning lane passes are for the really super popular rides.
You don’t have to buy Genie+ to buy the individual lightning lane/a la carte rides, or vice versa.
They’re separate independent systems. You can hold a pass or two from each type of ride at the same time.
You don’t have to buy these for every day of your trip or even for every person in your party.
The Genie+ batch of rides costs a flat fee (varies by day, usually around $20-30) per person per day for access to book all those rides, even if you park hop. You can ride as many of those rides as you can fit into the day, but can pick each ride only one time per day with a Genie+ pass. Otherwise, you will need to use the Standby line for additional rides.
For Genie+, everyone can pick their first ride at 7am the day of. Then, you can pick your next ride as soon as you scan into the currently booked ride or two hours from when you booked the current ride if it’s more than 2 hours away, whichever comes first.
You cannot pick return times for the Genie+ rides. You just get whatever the next available time slot is as listed in the app, so make sure to pick one with a time that you can do. If you realize later that you can’t do it, make sure to modify or cancel it before your window starts.
For individual a la carte rides, you’re limited to 2 a day, but you can buy both at 7am if you’re staying at a Disney resort or at that park’s official opening time if you’re not staying at a Disney resort.
If you’re park hoping, you can split your two individual a la carte rides between two parks. Just make sure the return time for your second park’s ride is after 2pm. since that’s when you can start hopping. You can pick the specific return windows for the a la cart rides.
Once you buy an individual a la carte ride time slot, the pass is NOT changeable, cancelable, or refundable, so choose carefully.
There is usually a grace period of 5 minutes before and 15 minutes after your return window to scan into the ride. It depends on the ride and cast members though, so try not to be too early/late.
If you miss your return window entirely, the system will consider that you have ridden it even though you didn’t, and you will not be able to pick that ride again.
Hope this helps! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Disney Cruise Lines suddenly announced the new sailings for Jan-May 2023 this morning! They include sailings for all ships, including the upcoming Wish!
Bookings for certain affinity groups and Castaway Club members start in 2 days, this Thursday, Oct 14th, with a new group opening each day until the general booking window on Thursday Oct 21st! Ahhh! Not much time to plan.
Thurs, Oct 14th: Platinum Castaway Club and Golden Oak Club Members
Fri, Oct 15th: Gold Castaway Club
Mon, Oct 18th: Silver Castaway Club, DVC, and Adventures by Disney Insiders
Thurs, Oct 21st: All Guests
It’s generally going to be cheapest to book as soon as you’re able, since prices tend to increase as inventory decreases, and certain sailings and room categories tend to sell out fast. Unless you’re booking Concierge level or with any of the non- refundable “guarantee” rooms, you can cancel and get your full deposit back up to a certain number of days before the sail date. It’ll say when in the fine print when you book, it’s different for each sailing. So, if you’re thinking about it, you might want to just grab one for now and then finish thinking.
Also, who knows what things will be like by 2023, but be aware of the current requirements and changes for the cruise line.
If you would like to see the itineraries, check out the official Disney site listing below. Once your booking window opens at 8am that morning, log in (well, make sure your group number is associated with your DCL account beforehand) and the booking buttons will be activated for you. Before you’re eligible to book, they’ll all say “Coming Soon”.
We’ve been on several DCL sailings so far, and we love them! If you would like to chat about cruising or would like me to help you book these, feel free to contact me.
There has been so much news from Disney lately that it has dominated the blog, but I love Universal too! Here’s a rundown on several happenings at Universal Orlando.
Halloween Horror Nights has been in full swing on select nights since early Sept and will go til Oct 31st. If you’re into scary thrills n chills, this may be for you. There are shows, haunted houses, scare actors roaming all around, and, of course, food and merch. Make sure you know what you’re getting into before you go though. This could be intense and not an event for the faint of heart. It is extremely popular though, so check for ticket availability before you make any plans.
Voodoo Donuts has a secret menu Pumpkin Spice donut, only available if you order via the Universal Orlando app. Details here.
Holiday festivities will begin Nov 13th and run thru Jan 2, 2022. This year, the Grinchmas show, Hogwarts projection show, and Macy’s parade will take place! Of course, there will be plenty of themed foods n merch and the lands will all be decked out. More details to come.
Shrek 4D is going to close permanently in January 2022. If you like that show, catch it now! No word on what’s going to replace it yet.
Revenge of the Mummy is closing for a lengthy refurbishment from Jan 7th to late summer 2022. If this is your must-do ride, you should plan your trip before or after this timeframe. No word on what they’re doing that’ll take so long though.
Mardi Gras is returning in full force from Feb 5 – Apr 24, 2022 . There will be parades, concerts, foods, and all sorts of fun! For more details, check this post from Universal, where you can also sign up to get notifications on the concert lineup.
We love Universal as much as Disney, especially the Harry Potter areas. They did an amazing job recreating those lands. If you like thrill coasters, the Velocicoaster and several others around the parks will be right up your alley. Each park has it’s own merits and are fun in their own different ways. We’ve often done trips where we go to both Disney and Universal. It’s ok to love both!
That’s all the news for now. I’ll post updates as I get them. If you want to chat about a possible Universal trip, feel free to contact me.
Bonus news! If you’ve read this far, you deserve this treat. Universal Japan just announced a partnership with Pokemon! No details on what they’re doing yet, but after seeing the videos on what they did with Nintendo, I bet this will be just as amazing! Can’t wait! Start saving now for a Japan trip!
